#ThrowbackThursday: 2014 Congressional Briefing - National Release of Speak Up 2013 K-12 Students

Happy #ThrowbackThursday! Each Thursday we'll spotlight past Project Tomorrow events, presentations, data, and more. In honor of our upcoming Congressional Briefing, this week we're focusing on last year's briefing, where we released our Speak Up 2013 data for K-12 students. Keep reading to learn more about the event and data from our 2013 student report, “The New Digital Learning Playbook: Understanding the Spectrum of Students’ Activities and Aspirations”:
On April 8, 2014 Project Tomorrow released the report “The New Digital Learning Playbook: Understanding the Spectrum of Students’ Activities and Aspirations” at a Congressional Briefing held in Washington, DC and for the first time, online in a special live stream of the event. Julie Evans, Project Tomorrow CEO, discussed selected student national findings from the Speak Up 2013 report and moderated a panel discussion with students who shared their insights and experiences with digital learning.
Key Findings from last year's report included:
  • Girls outpace boys in use of many digital tools for learning, particularly the socially based tools like texting and collaborating online.
  • 29 percent of high school boys say that they are very interested in a job or career in a STEM field, but only 19 percent of girls say the same. This gap remains even among girls and boys who self-assess their technology skills as advanced. During the seven years that the Speak Up surveys have polled high school students on their interest in STEM fields, the level of student interest has not increased significantly.
  • Students continue to report less regular interaction with traditional social networking sites like Facebook, while 44 percent of students in grades 6-12 report using social media apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Vine. Nearly one-third of high school students reported using Twitter.

Watch "TEACH" from director Davis Guggenheim

In celebration of Joel Laguna’s keynote address at this Friday’s Tomorrow’s Teachers Conference, Project Tomorrow and Participant Media’s TEACH Campaign are pleased to offer you a chance to view the documentary online.

About the Film
We all have had a teacher who's shaped us, inspired us, even scared us, and whom we can credit with having empowered us to become who we are today. To look at education in America, Davis Guggenheim brings us his third documentary "TEACH," which asks the question, What does it take to be a teacher? Offering a rare glimpse inside four public school classrooms, Guggenheim invites us to follow the struggles and triumphs of America's education system through the eyes, minds, and hearts of its most essential resource: teachers. Intense and emotional, this year-in-the-life of four public school teachers illustrates how tenacity, innovation, and a passion drives these educators as they navigate the ups and downs of the 2013 school year.

Special thanks to DIRECTV, the presenting sponsor for this year's conference. What's next for MOOCs?

When Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) first began, millions of people signed up to watch free video lectures from universities, complete assignments, and earn certificates; MOOCs were expected to reinvent higher education. While some still believe these free online courses can change the traditional college experience, new research on 1.7 million MOOC participants shows these courses didn't grow as expected. Here's what researchers from edX, one of the biggest MOOC platforms ran by Harvard and MIT, found from their participants:
  • In one survey, 39% of users identified as current/former teachers; one-in-five had already taught the subject they were taking a course in. Generally, MOOC participants were already well-educated.
  • There was heavy participation from Greece and Spain - during the period of the study, Greece universities suspended operations and Spain experienced national student protests, possibly causing students to look online for an alternative.
Because MOOCs don't have as many participants as originally expected, educators are beginning to rethink the best possible future for these online courses. Some believe that expanding on-campus applications of MOOCs is a potential answer, while others believe paid certificates for online courses is the way to go. Regardless of what people believe, companies and universities are still creating and supporting MOOCs for millions of people worldwide.

Interested in learning more about MOOCs? Check out the original article, "New Research Shows Free Online Courses Didn't Grow As Expected" by Anya Kamenetz (NPR). Have you taken a MOOC before? What do you predict for the future of MOOCs? Let us know in the comments section!

NSBA Education Technology Site Visits

Since 1987, the National School Boards Association's Technology Leadership Network has hosted education technology site visits that give educators a first-hand experience of successful technology programs in districts. Through these site visits, educators get an in-person look at successful methods and essential conditions for technology implementation at their schools.

From the past 28 years of site visits, the NSBA has seen that district leaders often cite these visits as an important factor in creating technology programs. The site visits take place at schools within the host district and include classroom observations, mini-briefings, and conversations with students, staff, board members, and community partners. Participants gain insight on how district staff implemented their vision, and in some cases, what changes they would make if starting over.

If you are interested in starting an education technology program within your own school or district, check out the upcoming site visits later this month:
